Blood Donation at Roche Bois

On Sunday 23rd August, a Blood Donation event took place at Roche-Bois. Event was hosted in the Roche Bois Sai D.G. and done in collaboration with the Ministry of Health/Blood Bank(obviously). There was a minor pre-event marketing campaign with Posters and those who already knew were told to spread the word.

The Event

There were one doctor and six nurses present. They brought along beds and all the material required.

The Location

The Procedure

Get the People

Many people came because they knew about the event but more than half of the donors were ‘picked’ from the road. There was a wonderful team doing canvasing on the spot. Stopping people passing by, be it on motorcycle, bicycle or cars.

Form Filling

Every person was welcomed inside the hall and two ladies help them filling the form.

Blood Testing(Pik pouce)

There was a nurse who tested each and every potential donor and told them what to do next.

Blood Pressure Test and Blood Donation

The people were given a glass of glucose to drink before and after. Two nurse will be present alongside the donors to monitor them.

After the donation

Every donor was given Juice, food(Roti-Kari) and a Malta Guinness.

9.00 until 12.30

After 3hours, 36pint of blood were collected(excluding the people who couldn’t donate for one reason or another). There was this lorry that came and packed everything neatly. The objective 30pint of blood because of the current ‘epidemic’, but more were obtained.

Important points about blood donation
  • Artificial blood doesn’t exist. The only way sick people can get blood is from blood donors.
  • Blood can be conserved only 35Days at 4 Degrees Celsius. This is why the blood bank continuously organizes these type of events.
  • White blood cells and plasma of the donor regenerates automatically within 24hours  and red blood cells take 3 weeks
  • People in age range 18-55 and weighing more than 55kg are potential donors.
  • It takes a maximum of 45 minutes to do it(including the preparation and resting process)
  • There is on risk of getting HIV because all the materials are sterilized before use and destroyed after unique use.
  • You are saving a life
